Newton Community Hospital Transformation
United Kingdom
The £1.75m transformation of Newton Community Hospital is a shining example of how PPP working can drive local healthcare delivery and support Government aims to move more services into the community. The Newton project was driven by a long-standing partnership between Community Health Partnerships (CHP), health investor Renova, Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, and Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. Delivered under the NHS LIFT programme in 2008, Newton Community Hospital includes an inpatient ward that provides vital ‘step down’ capacity, allowing patients to leave hospital and receive intermediate care in the community before returning home. With increasing pressures on acute hospitals, and wider NHS efforts to move more care into the community, £1.75m of funding was secured to further increase inpatient bed capacity. By transforming underutilised building space, the project delivered a 33% increase in bed capacity, a new gym and physiotherapy suite, additional clinical space, and sustainability improvements throughout the building. These improvements offer residents enhanced health facilities closer to home and boost the community health capacity available to the NHS, helping to ease pressures on the wider hospital estate. As a result, the Newton project has had a transformative impact on local patients and is helping to alleviate demand on acute hospitals across the region. As a major project delivered on-budget and ahead of schedule, Newton is an exemplar of partnership working to support local health priorities and deliver the Government’s neighbourhood health ambitions.
