“The York Schools partnership has been a great asset to our school, offering support and high-quality resources that have had a tangible impact on our children’s learning.”

The best public private partnerships are those in which all partners and end users benefit. And that’s why the York Schools partnership has endured for the last two decades. The York Schools partnership is a successful long-term operational public private partnership which runs the design, build, maintenance and operation of four primary schools in the city of York. Partners include the four primary schools, City of York Council, Sewell Education York, Sewell Facilities Management, Ebor Academy Trust and Sewell Advisory. The York Schools partnership has been in place for almost 20 years, yet it is still continuing to evolve and improve its schools as the needs of the local population change. In 2025, highlights of the continual improvement programme included the completion of a major extension at one school to give the students more space and dedicated music and science/technology rooms, and the reconfiguration of another school to create 32 extra places for students with special educational needs and disabilities. Over the decades the contract has been running, the schools have never had to close for any building-related issues. The long partnership means teachers and school staff have continuity and stability, knowing they can get on with their day job of providing the best educational experience for their pupils in the knowledge that their buildings are fit for purpose, safe, clean and warm.
